Volcano & Mt. Shari Foothills Course
A Two-Day, One-Night Journey Using the JR Senmo Line, Connecting Active Volcano Atosanupuri with Ancient Mt. Shari
This is a two-day, one-night course that takes you around the old and new volcanoes that represent eastern Hokkaido. On the first day, you'll start from Biruwa Station. After passing through Ishiyama Forest Road and the forests of the former Kushiro Railway, you'll come across Mt. Io (Atosanupuri), still spewing smoke. On the first day, you'll stay overnight in Kawayu Onsen town, where you can soothe your fatigue in the hot springs. On the second day, you'll travel by train to Satsugen Station and begin your hike. You'll travel through vast farmland with views of Mt. Shari. From Hoshikaze-no-oka Hill, you can see the majestic towering Mt. Shari and the Sea of Okhotsk beyond. Then, you'll head to your goal, Kiyosato-cho Station. These two days will allow you to feel the heartbeat of the earth.
Eastern Hokkaido is home to wild animals and human activity in a harsh natural environment. On the Hokkaido East Trail, you can enjoy hiking while experiencing nature and the lives of local people. However, it is essential to prepare for and deal with risks such as encounters with wild animals and sudden changes in weather, as well as be considerate of local people. Also, when hiking long trails, safety is fundamentally your own responsibility. Be sure to gather sufficient information in advance and make a solid plan before hiking.
