Section Hike No.10

A Day Hike from the Mountains to the Onsen Town, Following the Connection Between Nature and Local

Fill up on water at Ginrei-sui Spring before heading toward Mt. Mokoto, the highest peak on the Kussharo Caldera rim. From the summit, expansive views stretch toward Kushiro and the Shiretoko area.

After passing Highland Koshimizu 725, descend along the lush Mt. Mokoto forest road, where glimpses of Lake Kussharo appear between the trees. Beyond the lakeshore, the scenery gradually changes to pastures and farmland, bringing signs of everyday life closer.

Finally, the route leaves the forest and enters Kawayu Onsen Town, filled with the distinctive scent of sulfur. From mountains and forests to lake, farmland, and the onsen town, this course lets you experience a gradual transition from wild nature to human settlement.

Route Map

Eastern Hokkaido is home to wild animals and human activity in a harsh natural environment. On the Hokkaido East Trail, you can enjoy hiking while experiencing nature and the lives of local people. However, it is essential to prepare for and deal with risks such as encounters with wild animals and sudden changes in weather, as well as be considerate of local people. Also, when hiking long trails, safety is fundamentally your own responsibility. Be sure to gather sufficient information in advance and make a solid plan before hiking. For more information, please see the official Hokkaido East Trail website below.
