A Day Hike Through Landscapes Shaped by Volcanoes
Starting from Kawayu Onsen Town, the route enters the Tsutsujigahara Nature Trail. The unique forest, shaped by the volcanic activity of Mt. Io (Atosanupuri), gradually changes in character as you walk.
After experiencing the steaming volcanic landscape of Atosanupuri up close, continue to the historic JR Kawayu Onsen Station. From there, follow the remains of the former Kushiro Railway, once used to transport sulfur, and walk through the forest toward Lake Mashu.
At the end of the route, the clear blue waters of Lake Mashu await. This course offers a rich combination of volcanic landscapes, local history, and the magnificent nature of the region.
