Section Hike No.7
A Day Hike from Pastures into the Caldera, Shaped by Volcanoes
Starting from JR Mashu Station, the route passes through central Teshikaga before opening out once again into expansive pastureland. Along the way, enjoy some locally made ice cream before crossing the national highway and entering the caldera.
Continue toward Mt. Optateshike, a lava dome formed by volcanic activity, using it as a landmark as the route winds around the surrounding mountains. Before long, Lake Kussharo comes into view.
Soothe your tired legs in the open-air Kotan Onsen hot spring by the lakeshore before finishing at Kotan Junction Bus Stop. This course offers a dramatic transition in scenery, from pastoral landscapes to the volcanic terrain and lake views of the caldera.

Route Map
Eastern Hokkaido is home to wild animals and human activity in a harsh natural environment. On the Hokkaido East Trail, you can enjoy hiking while experiencing nature and the lives of local people. However, it is essential to prepare for and deal with risks such as encounters with wild animals and sudden changes in weather, as well as be considerate of local people. Also, when hiking long trails, safety is fundamentally your own responsibility. Be sure to gather sufficient information in advance and make a solid plan before hiking.
