Volcano & Forest Course
A day trip using the JR Senmo Line to experience forests, volcanoes, and the breath of life
This day trip course leads to Mt. Io (Atosanupuri), passing through the forest at the foot of Lake Mashu's outer rim. Starting at Biruwa Station, you'll head to Ishiyama Forest Road, where the forest floor is covered with beautiful ferns. Along the Ishiyama Forest Road, you'll find forest fruits such as wild grapes and Japanese knotweed, as well as traces of brown bears. Further ahead, the remains of the old Kushiro Railway offer a glimpse into the history of sulfur mining. As you leave the forest, Mt. Io (Atosanupuri) emerges from the farming area, and you can walk towards Kawayu Onsen town with it to your side. After a walk, you'll want to soak in a hot spring. Why not soothe your fatigue in Kawayu Onsen town?
Eastern Hokkaido is home to wild animals and human activity in a harsh natural environment. On the Hokkaido East Trail, you can enjoy hiking while experiencing nature and the lives of local people. However, it is essential to prepare for and deal with risks such as encounters with wild animals and sudden changes in weather, as well as be considerate of local people. Also, when hiking long trails, safety is fundamentally your own responsibility. Be sure to gather sufficient information in advance and make a solid plan before hiking. For more information, please see the official Hokkaido East Trail website below.
