“Bear Canister Rental” is a service that allows hikers to rent a bear canister for food storage only for the period they need while hiking the Hokkaido East Trail. The trail passes through habitat inhabited by brown bears (Higuma), and properly storing food and scented items is essential to help prevent unnecessary encounters with bears.

With this service, you can pick up a bear canister at designated locations along the trail and return it either in person at the Kawayu Trail Office or by delivery after completing your hike. We hope this service helps you enjoy a safe and comfortable walking journey on the trail.

Bear Canister Rental

• A portable storage container designed to store food and scented items and protect them from brown bears.

• Shipped to your designated location, picked up upon arrival, and returned by mail after use.

*Please read the Bear Canister Rental Service User Guide before using the bear canister.

*Bear canister shipments are limited to locations along the Hokkaido East Trail (Eastern Hokkaido area).

*Reservations for this service must be made at least 5 days before the intended date of use. We are unable to accept last-minute bookings.

■How to Use

1. Fill Out the Reservation Form

   • Complete the reservation form with the required information, including your rental period and pickup location.
     *Before submitting your reservation, please be sure to check availability on the calendar.​​

2. Complete Payment​

   • After submitting the form, proceed to the payment page and complete your payment.

3. Pick Up Your Bear Canister

   • Receive your bear canister at one of the designated pickup locations along the Hokkaido East Trail.

4. Hike​​

   • Enjoy your walking journey on the Hokkaido East Trail.

5. Return the Bear Canister​

   • Return the bear canister either:

     • in person at the Kawayu Trail Office

     • by delivery service.

■Rental Fees and Compensation

• Please make payment in advance according to the selected rental period.

• If the rental period is extended, an additional fee of ¥1,100 (tax included) per day (24 hours) will be charged upon return.

• In the event that the bear canister is damaged or lost, you will be required to pay a replacement fee of ¥22,000 (tax included) per canister. (An additional payment equivalent to the difference between the product price and the rental fee will be required.)

• Any bear canister that has been purchased due to damage or loss should either be taken home by the user or handed over at the return location for disposal.
