"Bear Spray Rental" is a service that allows hikers to rent bear spray for the period they need while hiking the Hokkaido East Trail. The trail passes through habitat inhabited by brown bears (Higuma), and carrying bear spray is recommended as part of your bear safety preparation, along with gathering sufficient information before your hike.

With this service, you can pick up bear spray at designated locations along the Hokkaido East Trail and return it either at designated return locations or by delivery after completing your hike. We hope this service helps you enjoy a safe and comfortable walking journey on the trail.

Bear Spray Rental

• A personal safety spray designed to help protect yourself in the event of an unexpected encounter with a brown bear.

• Shipped to your designated location, picked up upon arrival, and returned by mail after use.

*Please read the Bear Spray Rental Service User Guide before using the bear spray.

*Bear spray shipments are limited to locations along the Hokkaido East Trail (Eastern Hokkaido area).

*Reservations for this service must be made at least 5 days before the intended date of use. We are unable to accept last-minute bookings.

• 3 days: ¥5,500 (tax included)

• 7 days: ¥7,700 (tax included)

• 14 days: ¥9,900 (tax included)

• 21 days: ¥12,100 (tax included)

• 30 days: ¥15,400 (tax included)

■How to Use

1. Fill Out the Reservation Form

   • Complete the reservation form with the required information, including your rental period and pickup location.
     *Before submitting your reservation, please be sure to check availability on the calendar.​​

2. Complete Payment​

   • After submitting the form, proceed to the payment page and complete your payment.

3. Pick Up Your Bear Spray

   • Receive your bear spray at one of the designated pickup locations along the Hokkaido East Trail.

4. Hike​​

   • Enjoy your walking journey on the Hokkaido East Trail.

5. Return the Bear Spray​

   • Return the bear spray either:

     • in person at the Kawayu Trail Office

     • by delivery service.

■Rental Fees and Compensation

• Please make payment in advance according to the selected rental period.

• If the rental period is extended, an additional fee of ¥1,100 (tax included) per day (24 hours) will be charged upon return.

• In the event that the bear spray is used, damaged, or lost, you will be required to pay a replacement fee of ¥18,700 (tax included) per canister. (An additional payment equivalent to the difference between the product price and the rental fee will be required.)

• If the spray holster is damaged or lost, a replacement fee of ¥3,300 (tax included) will be charged.

• Any bear spray or holster that has been purchased due to use, damage, or loss should either be taken home by the user or handed over at the return location for disposal.
